Breaking into the world of children's book illustration requires more than just talent—it requires strategy :) At least I would say so. You have to know where you are, who you’re illustrating for? But what exactly should you include to catch the attention of publishers and art directors?

The Art of Growth is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

The way I see it, it is super important to understand the different age groups in children’s publishing and to tailor your portfolio to showcase your ability to illustrate for specific developmental stages.

In this guide, we’ll explore how to structure your portfolio to appeal to different age audiences, what elements art directors expect, and why having a strategic approach can maximize your chances of getting commissioned. Let’s dive in! (I will show you some examples of my own client work from 2024).
